Peak: October to March
The dry post-monsoon months are Kerala's obvious window. Alleppey backwaters are at their best from November to February — houseboats fill up 45 days ahead. Our Kerala Backwaters Week runs most often in December.
April and May — hot beaches, cheap hills
The lowlands get muggy, but Munnar and Wayanad stay pleasant at 20–25°C. It's also the off-season for Ayurveda centres, meaning 30–50% discounts on longer programmes. Kerala Tourism's official site has up-to-date Ayurveda centre listings.
Monsoon: June to September — the divided verdict
Monsoon Kerala is polarising. The pros: reduced crowds, dramatic waterfalls at Athirappilly, genuinely therapeutic Ayurveda (traditionally the best season for treatments), and half-price houseboats. The cons: houseboat cruising is sometimes restricted for safety, beaches are off-limits, and hikes become mud.
Our honest picks
- First-time Kerala: December.
- Ayurveda focus: June–September.
- Families with kids: October or January.
- Hill retreat only: April–May in Munnar.
