The garden
The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden sits on the lower slopes of Zabarwan Range, overlooking Dal Lake. Around 70 varieties, 1.5 million bulbs, across 35 hectares. It's Asia's largest.
When exactly
Opening is announced by Jammu & Kashmir Tourism roughly two weeks before. Peak bloom is usually 20 March – 10 April. Some years start earlier, some push to mid-April. Check 10 days before you travel.
The crowd
Peak weekends see 40,000+ visitors. Go on a weekday, first slot (0900–1100). Tickets are available on-site.
Pair with
- Badamwari almond blossoms (late March, before tulips peak).
- Shalimar and Nishat gardens when the canal fountains are freshly operational.
- Sonamarg if the road is open (usually not until May).
Sample 5-day spring route
- Day 1: Arrive Srinagar, houseboat on Dal Lake.
- Day 2: Tulip Garden sunrise, afternoon shikara and Mughal gardens.
- Day 3: Pahalgam day trip and overnight.
- Day 4: Gulmarg gondola.
- Day 5: Downtown Srinagar and depart.
