Kerala beyond the backwaters: 7 places locals actually go

1. Wayanad — the rainforest side

Spice plantations, Edakkal Caves, and tea hills. Four hours from Kochi by road. Best September to March.

2. Varkala — cliff-top beach

Kerala's answer to Goa, but prettier. Red cliffs, ayurveda centres, long sunsets. Better than Kovalam in every measurable way.

3. Marari Beach

Forty minutes from Alleppey but a world quieter. Fishing-village energy, beautiful palm-fringed coast. Include a night here after your houseboat in our Kerala Backwaters Week.

4. Bekal — the northern fort coast

Nine hours north of Kochi. Bekal Fort sits on a headland. Quiet beaches, zero tourists, very photogenic.

5. Thekkady

Gateway to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Boat safaris, spice walks, cardamom estates. Pair with Munnar.

6. Kumbalangi

A model eco-tourism village near Kochi. Stay in a homestay, learn to fish, watch chinese fishing nets at dawn.

7. Athirappilly

Kerala's Niagara. The Athirappilly Falls are fully alive only in monsoon. Two hours from Kochi.
