What to pack for Ladakh: the high-altitude essentials checklist

Clothing (layered, not bulky)

  • Base layer: 1 thermal top/bottom.
  • Mid: 2 fleece tops, 1 down jacket.
  • Shell: 1 waterproof jacket.
  • Pants: 2 quick-dry trekking pants.
  • Feet: 1 good trekking shoe + 1 pair of Crocs/sandals.
  • Head: wool beanie, wide-brim hat, sunglasses (UV400).
  • Hands: gloves (fleece + waterproof).

The "oh no" items people forget

  1. Lip balm with SPF — Ladakh's sun is brutal at altitude.
  2. Moisturiser — humidity is single-digit.
  3. Reusable water bottle — dehydration drives AMS.

Medicine

  • Diamox (consult doctor first) for altitude.
  • ORS, paracetamol, anti-diarrhoeal, antiseptic cream.
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+, reapply every 2h.
  • Any prescription meds in original boxes.

Gear

  • Headlamp: power outages are frequent.
  • Power bank: cold drains phones fast.
  • ID photocopies: for permits.

What to skip

  • Heavy denim (cold, slow to dry).
  • Cotton t-shirts for trekking (wet = cold).
  • Hair dryers (rare outlets, wasted power).
