Getting there
Overnight sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, then 1h minibus to Sapa. Or a 5h daytime drive on the new expressway.
Day 1 — Arrive, acclimatise
Light walk around Sapa town, visit the Saturday market if timing works. Dinner at a local BBQ spot.
Day 2 — Lao Chai and Ta Van villages
Half-day trek through Hmong and Giay villages. Stay in a Ta Van homestay. Home-cooked dinner with rice wine.
Day 3 — Ban Ho and waterfalls
Longer trek day — 6h through paddies and bamboo forest. Overnight in Ban Ho.
Day 4 — Return to Sapa, train back
Morning transfer, afternoon train back to Hanoi.
Season
- Best: September–November, April–May.
- Avoid: July–August (heavy rain, leeches).
- Unique: mid-September for rice harvest gold, February for snow if you're lucky.
Pack
- Good waterproof trekking shoes (no sneakers).
- Rain jacket.
- Hiking poles (rent in Sapa).
- Cash in VND for homestays.
